Both drink tax referendums thrown off Nov. ballot

The fate of the tremendously unpopular 10% drink tax in Allegheny County will not be in the hands of voters this November. Both referendums were unanimously tossed out today by the Court of Common Pleas.

Three Common Pleas judges unanimously decided today that drink tax referendums proposed by the Allegheny County Council and by Friends Against Counterproductive Taxation can’t be on the ballot because they tie the hands of county leaders in setting tax rates.

A surprise decision from the Allegheny County Election Board today over two proposed referendum questions regarding the controversial drink tax: neither question will appear on the November ballot.

The Allegheny County elections board in Pittsburgh has tossed out both ballot measures dealing with the county’s drink tax that was enacted this year to subsidize Port Authority public transit.
