Pittsburgh's National Aviary Expansion Plans Revealed

An indoor free-flight bird theater and an open-air rooftop theater for birds-of-prey highlight the long-awaited $23-million expansion plans the National Aviary revealed this morning.

The rooftop raptor theater will be 66 feet in diameter, according to the architecture plans, with bench seating for 50.

Inside the aviary’s indoor free-flight, 225-seat theater, visitors will watch various species of birds fly while lighting, video and sound enhance the experience, Flinn said.

Other additions include:

• 10 new interactive bird exhibits

• renovation and expansion of the bird hospital

• 45 additional parking spaces

• new conservation and field research center
